Just For Today - The Great Reiki Prayer

  • Susie

Often when we are finding our life a little out of control, a little off , tack, a little not quite heading in the right direction, we find recalibration , back to centre difficult. Sometimes we are not even sure where that centre is. Big chunks of change can be very difficult to achieve or maintain. So, simplicity is key.

The great Reiki Prayer offers us a wonderfully simple framework within which we can begin recalibration back to the centre of who we truly are - a divine spiritual being having a human experience and living in this sometimes hard-to-navigate human world.

The Reiki prayer: Just for today..... helps us address our egoic and subconscious reactions to external occurrences so we can return to a place of conscious choice and greater internal peace. It allows us to channel the beauty of our true higher spiritual nature into this earthly realm and forms a practical base for changing how we show up in the world.

The beauty of these precepts is that they fit into any culture, any religion, any morals-based society as a way of 'showing-up' that honours both ourself and others.

Just for today, I will not worry.

Just for today, I will not anger

Just for today, I will be grateful for my many blessings

Just for today, I will do my work honestly

Just for today, I will be kind to myself and all living things.

This is a beautiful prayer to print and have in your regular vision - on your fridge, on your desk, in your office, your phone, on a note beside your mirror, even in your car.

It is a wonderful basis for contemplation or meditation. You can meditate on the meaning of it one line at a time in one single session, or on the prayer as a whole reflecting on ways you could soften your reactions and approach, simply by making a conscious choice to abide by each precept one opportunity at a time.

A couple of starter questions to ponder:

  • Just for today where can I take a breath when I feel anger rise and make a conscious choice on a more balanced way of reacting?

  • Where in my life can I recognise the low level hum of worry and its corresponding feeling of anxiety and choose just for today to let go and let God?

  • Today, what act/s of service can I do a little more honestly, less begrudgingly, with more love - simply because I know I have made the choice to do so?

  • Where in my life can I apply the wonder of counting my many blessings?

  • Where can I shine the simple light of kindness with no expectation of return and let that gift ripple out into the world?

  • Where in my life can I apply these principles to soften my resistance to what is and make my life less stressful? More enjoyable? More Authentic?

These are just a few of the many many ideas for integrating this wonderful prayer and the precepts it offers into a sometimes chaotic world.

We sometimes ask how we can make a difference, effect positive change? The answer is one small choice, one small decision, one small step at a time.

Each moment we take a new breath is an opportunity to start afresh. To choose again.

And if tackling the whole prayer at once seems daunting - try living just one line throughout today. And if that seems too big - just try living it from one moment to the next, one breath to the next.

If your nervous system is too frayed, too overwhelmed - start simply with embodying just one line, one idea from this beautiful prayer - take a deep breath and repeat:

Just for today, I will be kind to myself.
