Tapping Your Unconscious Mind - Accessing Inner Wisdom & Creating Lasting Change

  • Susie

Explore how your deeper inner wisdom quietly shapes your habits, feelings and choices – and how hypnotherapy can help you create lasting, positive change.

Have you ever taken a moment to really marvel at the wonder that is your body - perhaps noticing what you see, what you hear, and what you feel as you do? The incredibly intricate biological masterpiece within which we reside between our first and last breaths? Have you noticed that your body keeps breathing, your heart keeps beating, your food digesting and your eyes keep reading this - sentence - all at the same time and all without you “doing” any of it on purpose?

While you’re focusing on one thing, another part of you is quietly taking care of thousands of tasks in the background. That part is often called the unconscious mind, and it’s far more active, aware, intelligent, and influential than we’re taught.

And as you do, you may begin to notice that learning how to work with this deeper mind - instead of fighting against it - can make your life easier and change feel gentler, faster, and more natural.

What Is Your Unconscious Mind Is Doing All Day?

Your conscious mind is the part that plans, thinks in words, and decides what’s for dinner. Unfortunately, despite its abilities, it can only hold and process a few things at once in awareness.

Your unconscious mind is vast, takes in and stores everything, and is the operating system that runs quietly 24/7 underneath. It:

  • Regulates your breathing, heart rate, digestion and all other automatic processes

  • Constantly gathers massive amounts of information through all your senses

  • Stores your memories and emotional associations

  • Builds habits and protective patterns over time

  • Spots patterns and reacts before you’ve had time to think things through

This is why you can know something logically (for example, “there’s no real danger here”) and still feel anxious, panicky or blocked. Your conscious mind and unconscious mind are not having the same conversation about the situation, even though you can see what’s happening, hear your own thoughts, and feel that reaction in your body.

How Your Unconscious Shows Up In Everyday Life

You don’t have to be a trained professional to notice your unconscious at work. It shows itself in very human, everyday ways:

  • Emotional reactions that feel bigger than the situation

  • Recurring dreams or themes in your sleep

  • Body sensations like tight shoulders or a knot in your stomach

  • Intuitive nudges, gut feelings, or sudden flashes of insight

  • “Accidents” or slips of the tongue that seem oddly revealing

These aren’t random quirks. They’re messages from a deeper part of you that is trying to protect, guide, or express something that hasn’t reached conscious words yet - a part that you might begin to sense as you pay more attention to what you are seeing, hearing and feeling in those moments.

Why Willpower Alone Often Isn’t Enough

Much self‑help advice focuses on the conscious mind: think positive, set goals, make a plan, repeat affirmations.

Those can definitely be useful, but if your unconscious programming is still running an old story - “it’s safer to stay small,” “I’ll be rejected if I speak up,” “change is dangerous” - then willpower can feel like pushing against a brick wall.

Talking figures - scientific study has shown that our conscious thought and choice shapes only about 5% of our day, and most of the time - around 95% - we are operating from unconscious programming - our internal version of “autopilot”.

Real transformation happens when both parts of our mind start working together. When the conscious mind chooses the direction and the unconscious mind provides the power and automatic follow‑through, so that how you think, what you say to yourself, and how you move through your day can all begin to align.

Hypnosis: A Gentle Bridge To Your Unconscious Mind

While stage hypnosis often gives a skewed impression of what hypnosis is, hypnotherapy with a trained professional isn’t about losing control or someone “taking over” your mind.

Rather than something someone 'does' to you, hypnosis is a natural state of focused relaxation that you enter into multiple times daily, where the interface between the busy, analytical part of your mind softens, and your deeper mind becomes more open and receptive. You might notice it as that familiar day-dreamy feeling when your eyes soften, your breathing slows, and outside sounds fade a little into the background? Or perhaps that spaced out yet aware state you enter when driving home?

In that state, we communicate with your unconscious in the language it understands best:

  • Images and metaphors

  • Emotions and sensations

  • Stories and symbols

For example, instead of simply telling you “be more confident,” a hypnotherapy session might guide you through a symbolic journey of stepping out of an old, heavy coat and into a lighter, more expansive space. While the conscious mind would simply hear a story, your unconscious mind understands that shift and begins updating the old patterns from within - as you picture that coat, hear the sound of it falling away, and feel the sense of space and ease around you.

What Changes When You Work At This Level

When you include your unconscious mind in the process, a lot can change – and quite quickly:

  • Habits and automatic reactions soften and reorganise

  • Anxiety and self‑doubt lose their grip as old emotional associations are updated

  • Inner conflicts (“I want this, but I keep sabotaging myself”) begin to resolve

  • Creativity, intuition, and a sense of inner guidance feel easier to access

Instead of constantly second guessing, arguing with yourself, or forcing change, you start to feel as though life is simply moving or flowing in the same direction as your deeper needs - and you may begin to see new options, hear a kinder inner voice, and feel a quieter, calmer steadiness within.
